DS Redesign -- Is it Necessary?

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Now on to the story...

In an interview with SPOnG.com Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, commented on plans to redesign the DS hardware "in the same way they [developers] did with the transition from Game Boy Advance to Game Boy Advance SP."

How do you feel about the current hardware configuration? What issues have you had with it? Would you be willing to purchase a redesigned DS?

Post your comments.

I think the current design is great. I sure hope they dont go with another slim-tall design like the GB/GBC/GBAsp again, my hands always feel crunched together with those :)

I really don't like the design, the system is too top-heavy and the faceplate of the bottom half is raised up on the sides and causes too much direct pressure on your palms. (from the bottom corners)

I liked the design of the SP alot but I don't think it would work well with the DS because it has sterio sound.

If they could round the sides and make it less top-heavy then it would be much more comfortable to use. I doubt that they'd make so few changes to the system for it though.

I got a DS a few days ago with Mario DS. I find my hands tend to ache after a short period when using the touchpad as a joystick. My index finger no longer reaches the left shoulder button when my thumb is on the touchscreen. I tend to hold the unit more with my right hand when using my left thumb on the touchpad. This makes it difficult to reach the right shoulder button. I'm constangly readjusting how I'm holding the unit. End result, sore fingers.

I've been putting it down to my not being used to the system. I've only had it a few days.

If they can produce a DS SP - I would want it. I wouldn't buy it on day 1 like I did with the DS, but I would probably float the suggestion to wifey around xmas.

I'm plinking around in HAM right now to make a simple eBook reader and although I'm ostensibly developing it for the DS I can't stop testing it on my little SP. The thing just feels so good in my hands.

BS the design needs some major improvement, the 4 buttons on the right are VERY unconfortable... if you have to use them all... just try gba games, its feels much more natural to use y and x than a and b. but you cant... they give no option for that.

Plus the fact you need to restart you system every time you used pictochat or change any settings... could be a lil better

Yeah, I agree with deadlock32, the DS OS is in need of some tweaking to eliminate constant restarts.

Maybe I'm the only one here, but I also don't like the DS power button... I much prefer the gameboy style.

Oh, and analog stick? I don't see any good reason this was left off. You'd think when they were porting Mario 64 someone would've noticed it didn't control half as well as on a console designed 12 years ago.

I probably wouldn't buy a redesign, I've never owned any of Nintendo's redesign handhelds (GBP and GBASP). I'll save my money for the next Gameboy instead.

I don't have any problems with aches and pains in my hands or fingers, probably because I've owned GBA since shortly after launch, which I never had problems with because the horizontal design didn't crunch up my fingers like the vertical designs I owned previously. It's a little heavy, but I don't really pay attention to it, it's not so heavy I need to put effort in holding it.

Using the touch screen and having your fingers ready to press all the buttons is nearly impossible, it's up to the developer to make up for it, Metroid did a good job at that.
I agree with the A/B X/Y problem with GBA games, it's much more comfortable with X/Y. Same with the reboots. All it would take is an update to the OS, but does anyone know if the firmware is upgradeable or not? That would save a lot of us money from a redesigned DS if all we want is a new OS.
The power button doesn't bother me much, but I agree, the slider switch was better.

Analog stick? It seems to be mostly console fanboys that think it's stupid to be without an analog stick. I don't see a reason for it when you've got a touch screen that can closely emulate analog. I agree they screwed up the emulation on Mario, making the circle move around when you go out of range, but again that's up to the developer to emulate it properly. Also, how would they really fit a stick in the closed DS? The one on PSP looks way to big for the DS, but then again Nintendo always comes up with innovative surprises, so if they wanted to they probably could.

The DS hurts my hands after playing any game that uses the action buttons, or especially when playing GBA games, for more than ten minutes. It's really a drag. Plus, using the stylus with driving games is completely impossible. There's no way to feel the center of control, and the screen's too far away from the edges to use the thumb pad.

So far, I'm really disappointed with it, and I'd only buy a redesigned version if it had an analogue stick, or if they were going to release a good game for it before I die. However, I guess that's a comment for another day...

This is outrageous. If they wanted to redesign the DS they should have done that before they released it! I say its not necessary. Not after I just spent $149 on a DS already.
